Frequently Asked Questions
General Information
What is the difference between BIPS and QUIRK+?
The British and Irish Physics Societies (BIPS) is the overarching coalition and network of student-led physics societies from universities across the UK and Ireland.
QUIRK+ is the name of our flagship annual conference, organised and hosted by BIPS.
Who can attend the QUIRK+ Conference?
The conference is primarily aimed at undergraduate and Master's physics students. However, we also warmly welcome PhD candidates, early-career researchers, and students from closely related fields (such as mathematics, engineering, and computer science).
How much does a ticket cost?
Thanks to the generous support of our corporate sponsors and academic partners, general admission to the daytime QUIRK+ Conference is completely free for students. This ensures that financial barriers do not prevent the brightest minds from accessing top-tier networking and career opportunities.
Logistics & Attendance
Are travel bursaries available for students travelling from outside London?
We are actively working with our sponsors and participating university departments to secure travel grants for delegates travelling from Ireland, Scotland, and regions outside the South East. More information on how to apply for travel subsidies will be released alongside the official registration form.
What is the dress code?
For the main daytime conference and career fairs, the dress code is Smart Casual. We recommend dressing professionally, as you will be networking directly with both students and industry. However, if you want to represent your university through hoodies or other merchandise, that is completely fine too!
If you have been invited to our annual dinner, the dress code is up to the external venue provider, which has been formal and black tie in recent years.
Is accommodation provided?
We do not provide direct accommodation for general delegates. However, we will publish a list of recommended affordable hostels and hotels closer to the event date. We highly recommend coordinating with your university's physics society to book group travel and accommodation to save costs.
Participation & Speakers
How can I apply to be a speaker?
We welcome speaker submissions from all academic levels! A call for abstracts will be announced shortly. All submissions will be reviewed blindly by a mutual academic panel comprised of representatives from our partner universities. Please visit our Speakers page for more details.
How can my university join BIPS?
If your university's Physics Society is not currently listed on our Participating Institutions page and you would like to join the BIPS network, we would love to hear from you. Please have your society's President or academic liaison email us at [email protected] to discuss integration.
